Monika Cilmi

Monika is a professional artist, author, creative coach and university lecturer, with a strong connection with Japan and its culture.  Her practice and life are embedded within Zen philosophy and Buddhism.

She holds a degree in visual arts, a PG certificate in Japanese and Korean art and MA by Research in Fine art.  She also studied colour therapy, Philology, Shamanic arts and chakra dance.

She has exhibited her work internationally and is the author of six books, four on origami and two on Oriental and mindful drawing; She is continually active in the local community, and loves to link art with wellness focusing on natural gestures and reconnecting to nature and the environment.

Since childhood she felt close to spiritual and creative practices and especially attracted to dance and movement. Shamanism and the deep connection to nature was always present for her. She also believe in the interconnection between art and science. Her love for geometry turned into Mandala and origami, her interest for natural science turned into symbolic depictions of flora and fauna, and her passion for linguistics and anthropology turned into the representation of the essence of humans and their marks.

Her work is inspired by nature and the body-mind relationship. The line is the key to her research, the energy and vibration that is created through its movement. It symbolizes a life journey.

She uses the fluidity of the marks and strokes to create and express energy. Nature and in particular water and the sea have always been an inspiration to her as symbols of space, freedom and movement.

Paper has always been her passion and it is a crucial part of her practice.  Its various applications follow an abstract path visible through the extraordinary elements and materials in which they are created.
